Once detox and treatment are over, your recovery isn’t over. In fact, it’s just beginning! And, these first days of recovery, once treatment concludes, are the riskiest. Unfortunately, most individuals who seek treatment for addiction relapse in the beginning days of their recovery journey. And, sadly, these first initial days are when the majority of overdose deaths occur. So, to prevent relapse and continue with recovery, it’s suggested that treatment efforts continue after detox and the initial treatment program. Here at Mountainview Recovery, individuals who have completed the initial partial hospitalization program are welcome to continue with treatment by enrolling in the Intensive Outpatient Program.
Basically, an Intensive Outpatient Program is a step down from the partial hospitalization program. During the PHP, the requirement for time spent in therapy and other treatment activities is more extensive. Typically, during the PHP, individuals can expect to attend sessions 5 days a week for 8 hours a day. However, with the Intensive Outpatient Program, individuals are expected to enter the workplace or educational system while utilizing learned techniques and applying knowledge gained during treatment. So, the hours spent in therapy and support groups are fewer.
When individuals are no longer spending most of their day in treatment but still getting outside help with recovery, it’s known as aftercare.
The IOP is a form of aftercare. However, aftercare isn’t over once a person is done with an IOP or even moves away from sober living. Aftercare can last for years.
After all, keeping up with recovery efforts is a vital part of successfully healing from addiction. Additionally, the risk of relapse doesn’t disappear. Even those in recovery for many years are still at risk for slipping into the process of relapse. But, it’s proven that keeping up with recovery with aftercare efforts, including enrolling into an IOP after initial treatment, can help to reduce the risk of relapse drastically.
Initially, after you graduate from a residential treatment or our PHP program here at Mountainview Recovery, patients meet with our case manager to determine aftercare needs. Because we believe that treatment should be specific to meet individual circumstances and needs, aftercare may be different for each patient in our care.
