Individual Therapy

Individualized therapy consists of one-on-one counseling sessions between an individual in treatment and an addiction therapist. While different people may respond better to varying treatment strategies, individualized therapy is utilized throughout the entirety of treatment at Mountainview Recovery. That’s because it can offer a number of helpful benefits during time spent in treatment for addiction including:

  • Providing a safe space for individuals to open up about addiction experiences.
  • Offering a supportive environment in which individuals can uncover underlying conditions or events which may have led up to addictive behaviors.
  • Providing a place to discover emotions or concerns about recovery which may set sobriety at a stand-still.
  • Giving an environment to work on issues which may not be deemed comfortable to work on in a group setting.
  • Sets individuals up to work on issues that may contribute to addictive behaviors even after treatment or time in sober living is over.

Individual Therapy for Drug Addiction Treatment

While many people may think one-on-one individual therapy sessions are used to address drug use, they are much more than that. They are used to examine all aspects of an individual’s life as they relate to addiction. So, a therapist may ask about a person’s family, job, criminal history, and social roles. Additionally, these sessions may also address the ins and outs of an individual’s specific treatment plan. This way, individuals enrolled in various treatment programs are aware and prepared for what they may experience during their time spent in therapy.

Types of Individualized Therapy

While an individual may not exactly know what to expect with each session, a number of therapeutic techniques can be expected throughout these individualized sessions. Some commonly utilized therapeutic techniques used in individual therapy sessions for addiction may include:

Narrative Therapy: As the name suggests, this type of individual therapy involves speaking upon experience. Basically, the individual in counseling will narrate their personal experience with addiction. This helps both therapist and individual in treatment to identify underlying conditions which may have enabled addictive behaviors.

CBT: Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is an approach to therapy that insists self-harming behaviors are a result of destructive thought patterns. So, it works to address unhealthy thought patterns as they may result in harmful, addictive behaviors. This helps individuals understand more about mindfulness as it relates to emotional health and develop useful coping skills to prevent relapse once treatment ends.

DBT: Dialectical behavioral therapy, or DBT, is both a cognitive and behavioral approach to therapy sessions. It involves helping individuals gain skills related to mood regulation, stressful situations, mindfulness, and balance relationships. Basically, it helps individuals identify and change behaviors which may be enabling addictive tendencies. Additionally, it’s proven effective in helping individuals diagnosed with mood and personality disorders to change thought and behavior patterns as well.

A Personalized Tool to Help Those in Addiction Treatment

Individual Therapy for Substance Abuse in North Carolina | Mountainview RecoveryIndividual therapy sessions may differ from patient to patient. They’re individual for a reason–to address the needs and issues a specific person is dealing with as they relate to addiction. For example, at first, therapy sessions may involve talking about stopping the use of drugs or alcohol. Later, they may involve talking about relapse triggers and how to avoid relapse once treatment concludes. There is no cookie-cutter method to individual therapy sessions because there is no singular addiction experience. One-on-one therapy sessions are what you make of them!
